Gastone Marotti, MD

Dr Marotti is director of the Department of Anatomy and Histology at the University of Modena in Modena, Italy. He received his medical degree in medicine and surgery from the University of Padova in Padova, Italy. He received his university teaching qualifications in histology and general embryology in 1967 and in human anatomy in 1969. In 1975, Dr Marotti was appointed Full Professor of Human Anatomy at the University of Sassari and in 1978 he became Full Professor of Human Anatomy at the University of Modena.

Prior to becoming director of the Department of Anatomy and Histology at the University of Modena, Dr Marotti served as director of the Institutes of Human Anatomy in Sassari (1973-1977) and in Modena (1979-1993). He served as director of the Department of Morphological Sciences and Legal Medicine of Modena in 1994 to 1999 as well as coordinator of the Human Anatomy Section from 1994 to 2002. From 1979 to 1984, Dr Marotti was prorector of the University of Modena.

Dr Marotti was president of the International Society of Bone Morphometry from 1992 to 1996 and a member of the Board of Directors of the Italian Society of Osteoporosis and Metabolic Bone Diseases from 1995 to 2000. He is a founding member of the International Society of Musculoskeletal and Neuronal Interactions. In addition, he has been a member of the Olympic Academy in Vicenza since 1992.

David Dempster, PhD
President (1996-1999)

Born and raised in Scotland, Dr. Dempster came to the United States in 1981. He is currently a Professor of Clinical Pathology at Columbia University in New York and the Director of the Regional Bone Center at the Helen Hayes Hospital in West Haverstraw, NY.

Dr. Dempster obtained his Ph.D. from the University of Glasgow, and completed postdoctoral studies in Switzerland and France. He has published over 100 papers on the regulation of bone and calcium metabolism by steroid and peptide hormones, and on bone structure in health and disease. Several of Dr. Dempster’s images of bone structure are on permanent display at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, DC.

Dr. Dempster is an Associate Editor of Osteoporosis International, and serves on the Editorial Boards of Bone and The Journal of Clinical Densitometry. His research work has been continuously supported by the National Institutes of Health for the past 18 years.

Juliet Compston, MD

Dr Compston is Professor of Bone Medicine and Honorary Consultant Physician at the University of Cambridge, School of Clinical Medicine. Prior to her association with the University of Cambridge in 1989, Dr Compston served at the University of Wales College of Medicine & University Hospital of Wales, Cardiff as Senior Lecturer in Pathology and Honorary Consultant in Medicine.

Dr. Compston is currently serving on numerous scientific advisory councils and clinical research committees such as the Board of the International Osteoporosis Foundation, The Committee of Scientific Advisers of the International Osteoporosis Foundation, Osteoporosis Foundation Call to Action for Osteoporosis, Council of Management of National Osteoporosis Society, and the Advisory Scientific Board of the National Osteoporosis Society. She has served as president, chairman, or member of numerous societies, including the Bone and Tooth Society of Great Britain, Lifespan NHS Trust, Wellcome Trust Physiology and Pharmacology Panel, Royal College of Physicians Guidelines Development Group on Glucocorticoid-induced Osteoporosis, and the Royal College of Physicians Guidelines Working Group for Update on Management of Postmenopausal Osteoporosis. She has published over 280 articles in peer reviewed journals, invited chapters, book chapters, or books.

Dr. Compston is on the editorials boards of Bone, Journal of Bone and Mineral Research, Journal of Clinical Densitometry, Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism, Treatments in Endocrinology, Osteoporosis International, and Clinical Cases in Mineral and Bone Metabolism.

Her research interests include the investigation of the pathophysiology and treatment of osteoporosis. Dr Compston’s current research is directed towards the effects of estrogens and antiestrogens on bone remodeling and structure, and glucocorticoid-induced osteoporosis.

Brendan Boyce, MD
President (2002-2006)

Brendan F. Boyce received his medical degree from the University of Glasgow, Scotland in 1972 and trained as an anatomic pathologist at the University Department of Pathology in the Royal Infirmary, Glasgow where he was appointed lecturer and later senior lecturer in Pathology. He became a member of the Royal College of Pathologists of Great Britain in 1979 and was appointed senior lecturer and honorary consultant pathologist in 1982 in the Royal Infirmary. He has had a special interest in the pathology of metabolic bone disease since 1977 when he trained in histomorphometry in the laboratory of Dr. Pierre Meunier in Lyon, France. He collaborated with the late Dr. Iain Boyle and his group in clinical studies of patients with metabolic bone diseases until 1986 when he spent 2 years on sabbatical in the laboratory of Dr. Greg Mundy at the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio. He returned to San Antonio in 1990 to the Department of Pathology where he worked in collaboration with Dr. Mundy and colleagues developing a number of animal models to study the effects of cytokines and growth factors on the function and regulation of osteoclasts in normal and disease states. In 1999 he moved to the University of Rochester New York to be Director of Surgical Pathology where he heads a bone research group and collaborates with a growing group of basic and clinical bone biology scientists in the Center for Musculoskeletal Research.

I am delighted to announce that the next Congress of the Society will be held at the Ferry Porsche Congress Center in Zell am See, Austria, from May 28 - 30, 2009, immediately following the end of the 36th European Symposium on Calcified Tissues in Vienna, Austria. I and the Members of the Board invite you to join us for this Congress in which recent advances in bone morphometry will be presented along with sessions on all aspects of bone quality, including new imaging techniques, and how these can be used to improve our understanding of the pathogenesis of common bone diseases and determine the efficacy of treatments for them. In addition, practical courses in bone morphometry will be offered. Bone morphometry is an essential element of many clinical and animal studies designed to assess how bone cells function and respond to a variety of influences, such as hormones, cytokines, and growth factors as well as drugs given to treat bone or other diseases

The International Society of Bone Morphometry has its origins in a series of Workshops on Bone Morphometry the first of which was held in Ottawa in 1973. Its core mission is to foster interaction among clinicians and scientists using bone morphometry to develop refinements and improvements in the various techniques and to foster education and training of clinicians and scientists outside the field on all aspects of bone morphometry.

The Ferry Porsche Congress Center is a newly built congress facility right in the center of tourism Mecca Zell am See-Kaprun, providing state-of-the-art technical equipment potentialities and first-rate aesthetic décor. Most hotels and restaurants in Zell am See are within walking distance. Zell am See and the surrounding mountain area offer great scenery, many attractions, championship golf courses, and more than hundred restaurants.

Hartmut Malluche, MD
Founder, President (1989-1992)

Hartmut H. Malluche, MD, FACP, is the Robert G. Luke Chair in Nephrology, Professor of Medicine, Chief of the Division of Nephrology, Bone, and Mineral Metabolism, and Director of the General Clinical Research Center at the University of Kentucky in Lexington, Kentucky. Prior to his current position, he served as Associate Professor of Medicine in the Department of Internal Medicine, Division of Nephrology, at the University of Southern California Medical Center in Los Angeles.

Dr Malluche has served as a member on numerous scientific advisory councils and clinical research committees and has published over 400 articles in various scientific journals, including Journal of Clinical Investigation, American Journal of Physiology, Endocrinology, Kidney International, Journal of Bone and Mineral Research, Journal of the American Society of Nephrology, and Transplantation. He is the editor of International Journal of Clinical Nephrology and the textbook Clinical Nephrology, Dialysis and Transplantation. Dr Malluche received the Distinguished Lecturer Award from the Chinese Society of Nephrology in 1992 and the Award for Excellence in Research from the University of Kentucky. He is an honorary member of the Australian and New Zealand Society of Nephrology, and he is the founder and first president of the International Society for Bone Morphometry. He is a fellow of the American College of Physicians and a member of the American Society for Clinical Investigation, the American Society of Nephrology, the International Society of Nephrology, and the American Society for Bone and Mineral Research, among many others. Dr Malluche has been listed in Who´s Who in the World annually since 1987 and is a Who´s Who Life Member since 2001. He has been listed in 100 Best Doctors in America in 2002, 2003, and 2004. In 2003 Dr Malluche was awarded the National Leadership Award, Honorary Chairman, Physicians´ Advisory Board. He was also awarded the Honorable Order of Kentucky Colonels, the highest civilian leadership award of the State of Kentucky.

Dr Malluche received his medical degree summa cum laude from J.W. Goethe University in Frankfurt am Main, Germany , and completed a residency and fellowship at the Center of Internal Medicine, University Hospitals, J.W. Goethe University .
