ISBM welcomed by the Japanese Society for Bone Morphometry (JSBM)

Friday, June 30th, 2023

Last week the JSBM hosted current ISBM President Dr. Erica Scheller as part of their annual meeting, this year Chaired by Dr. Tadahiro Iimura in beautiful Sapporo, Japan. The leadership of both societes aims to strengthen the ties between ISBM and JSBM through mutual scientific exchange and collaboration. Consistent with this goal, we look forward to hosting JSBM early career investigators and faculty, including Dr. Iimura as an invited plenary speaker, at the upcoming ISBM 2024 meeting in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.
The links between ISBM and JSBM go back nearly 50-years. The JSBM began in 1979 when Dr. Eimei Takahashi (Department of Orthopedic Surgery, Niigata University) held the first workshop on bone morphometric measurement in Niigata City. Dr. Takahashi was also a member of the founding Board of Directors that created the ISBM as originally conceptualized in 1973, and was Chair of the 5th ISBM meeting in 1988. ISBM was also hosted in Tokyo, Japan in 2015 by Dr. Masaki Noda. Pictured here from left to right: Dr. Noriaki Yamamoto, Dr. Erica Scheller, and Dr. Eimei Takahashi.
This year marks the 43rd annual meeting of the JSBM. The JSBM includes ~300 members throughout Japan, including a large group of Orthopaedic Surgeons in addition to basic and translational scientists. Altogether, the ongoing research spans from bench to bedside with key strengths in areas including human clinical histomorphometry, in vivo imaging, bone organoids, and AI-guided image analysis. There are many potential opportunities for collaboration between members of ISBM and JSBM, and we look forward to exploring these possibilities.

We thank Dr. Akinori Sakai (JSBM President) and Dr. Tadahiro Iimura (JSBM 2023 Chair) for their generous welcome and partnership with the ISBM. We look forward to continuing our connections at ISBM 2024 and at future JSBM meetings. We would also like to give special thanks to Dr. Noriaki Yamamoto for hosting Dr. Scheller during the visit.
