David Dempster, PhD
President (1996-1999)
Born and raised in Scotland, Dr. Dempster came to the United States in 1981. He is currently a Professor of Clinical Pathology at Columbia University in New York and the Director of the Regional Bone Center at the Helen Hayes Hospital in West Haverstraw, NY.
Dr. Dempster obtained his Ph.D. from the University of Glasgow, and completed postdoctoral studies in Switzerland and France. He has published over 100 papers on the regulation of bone and calcium metabolism by steroid and peptide hormones, and on bone structure in health and disease. Several of Dr. Dempster's images of bone structure are on permanent display at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, DC.
Dr. Dempster is an Associate Editor of Osteoporosis International, and serves on the Editorial Boards of Bone and The Journal of Clinical Densitometry. His research work has been continuously supported by the National Institutes of Health for the past 18 years.
